Why we existThe link between the IEEE global body and every engineering student at Peradeniya.

We inspire future engineers to achieve, and lead our community to greater heights — by giving every student a platform to reach out to the world and try everything, because we believe in the impact engineers can make to build a better tomorrow for everyone.

Our vision

To be the go-to place for professionals and students in the engineering, science and technology community of the University of Peradeniya.

Our mission

To establish ourselves as a platform for collaboration, innovation and professional development — creating and bridging the gap to the opportunities IEEE offers, within the university and beyond, through the strength of the worldwide IEEE network.

2001 — 2026

Twenty-five years of firsts.

From the first IEEE student branch in the country to seven active chapters — a quarter-century of engineers building for a better tomorrow.

  1. 2001

The first IEEE student branch in Sri Lanka

Founded on 19 July 2001 at the Faculty of Engineering with the help of IEEE senior members and dedicated student members.

  2. 2010

Winner — IEEE Region 10 website contest

The branch’s first website, launched by the 2010 committee headed by Mr. B.L.D.S. Balasooriya under the guidance of Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake and Dr. A. Atputharaja, won the R10 contest.

  3. 2016

Sri Lanka’s first IEEE MTT-S student chapter

The Microwave Theory and Technology Society chapter begins — later funding a 4.6 m parabolic antenna to serve as a radio telescope.

  4. 2022

    Sat Cap antenna workshop

MTT-S runs its first antenna workshop with Eng. Tharindu Dayarathne, creator of Raavana-1 — Sri Lanka’s first CubeSat.

  5. 2023

    Bittopia — the coding arcade

Xtreme.Pera-23 brings IEEEXtreme to campus: teams compete through the night at the Faculty of Engineering, alongside the global contest.

  6. 2024

    Predicta 1.0 & CodeVortex

A national AI prediction challenge on Kaggle joins the flagship line-up, and Pera.Xtreme CodeVortex trains teams for IEEEXtreme 18.0.

  7. 2025

IEEE Computer Society chapter goes live

The newest member of the #ieeepdn family opens doors to tech innovation — WIE, ComSoc and PES keep a packed calendar of talks, visits and outreach.
