Leading the Student Branch for 2025/26.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Student Branch of the University of Peradeniya (IEEE SB UoP) was established on 19 July 2001 — the first IEEE student branch in Sri Lanka.
IEEE SB UoP was founded with the help of IEEE senior members and dedicated student members, and exists first and foremost for the benefit of students with IEEE.
Over the years the branch has organised events across telecommunication, robotics, electronics and power & energy — building social and professional skills along the way. Workshops have been conducted with organisations such as the Ceylon Electricity Board, Dialog and Huawei, and field trips to the Hambantota wind power plant, the Laxapana hydro power complex, Norochcholai coal power plant, Heladanavi diesel power plant, Galle SVC and an MDF board manufacturer remain treasured memories.
In 2010 the committee headed by Mr. B.L.D.S. Balasooriya launched the branch’s first website — guided by Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake (Chair, IEEE Sri Lanka Section, 2010) and student counsellor Dr. A. Atputharaja — and it won the IEEE Region 10 website contest that year.

The University of Ceylon was established in Colombo on 1 July 1942 and moved to the banks of the Mahaweli river, renamed the University of Peradeniya in 1978. Its first Vice-Chancellor, Sir Ivor Jennings, envisioned graduates who were well educated and rich in soft skills and wisdom through different experiences.
Within the Faculty of Engineering, the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering is home to many clubs and societies that motivate innovation and creativity — and the IEEE Student Branch is a proud example.
From the first IEEE student branch in the country to seven active chapters — a quarter-century of engineers building for a better tomorrow.

The branch’s first website, launched by the 2010 committee headed by Mr. B.L.D.S. Balasooriya under the guidance of Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake and Dr. A. Atputharaja, won the R10 contest.
The Microwave Theory and Technology Society chapter begins — later funding a 4.6 m parabolic antenna to serve as a radio telescope.
MTT-S runs its first antenna workshop with Eng. Tharindu Dayarathne, creator of Raavana-1 — Sri Lanka’s first CubeSat.
Xtreme.Pera-23 brings IEEEXtreme to campus: teams compete through the night at the Faculty of Engineering, alongside the global contest.
A national AI prediction challenge on Kaggle joins the flagship line-up, and Pera.Xtreme CodeVortex trains teams for IEEEXtreme 18.0.
The newest member of the #ieeepdn family opens doors to tech innovation — WIE, ComSoc and PES keep a packed calendar of talks, visits and outreach.
LEVEL UP draws 350+ participants, seven chapters and affinity groups share one branch — and a brand-new home on the web, kept fresh by every chapter’s own webmaster.

Academic staff guidance & support

Committees are elected every year. Previous committees are archived — not erased — so the branch’s history stays intact.
Any undergraduate of the Faculty of Engineering can volunteer — you don’t need prior experience. Committees are elected each year, and volunteer calls for organising committees, design, editorial and programming teams open throughout the term.
Volunteer calls open every term — organising committees, design, editorial, programming and chapter teams. No experience needed, just curiosity.
